Sustainability – Take Action Now!

“Right now we are facing a man-made disaster of global scale, our greatest threat in thousands of years: climate change. If we don't take action, the collapse of our civilization and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon." David Attenborough

We do not believe that the Government’s target of bringing all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 is ambitious enough. Nor do we believe that CO2 production is the only factor in producing healthy buildings for us to live and work in, or indeed in meeting Attenborough’s call for action to save the wider environment.

The RIBA have launched the 2030 Climate Challenge which has the following principle aims:

  1. Reduce operational energy demand by at least 75%, before UK offsetting

  2. Reduce embodied carbon by at least 50-70%, before UK offsetting

  3. Reduce potable water use by at least 40%

  4. Achieve a range of core health and wellbeing targets

As Architects, we have a moral and imperative duty to respond to this challenge and so we will work with our clients towards achieving these goals in any new-build or retrofit projects we undertake.

This starts with the constant improvement of our knowledge base, understanding the problems and ways of finding solutions. To this end we are members of The Green Register and the AECB – Association for Environment Conscious Buildings, and have attended many of their training courses on;

  • PassivHaus & EnerPHit

  • AECB Building Standard

  • Building Biology

  • The importance of ventilation in buildings

  • Retrofit

We welcome the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice and would challenge our clients to accept their responsibility by adding the goals of a truly sustainability future to their brief when commissioning buildings.
